Office of Notary Commissions and Authentications

As of July 1, 2016 the fee a notary public may charge has been increased from $2 to $5.


The Office of Notary Commissions and Authentications does not issue or renew passports.  In order to apply for a new or to renew a passport, you may go through the US Department of State: travel.state.gov, or search the Internet for other providers that will help you get or renew your passport.

The Office of Notary Commissions and Authentications (ONCA) commissions District of Columbia notaries public and authenticates documents for domestic and foreign use. Authentication requires a signature from a DC department head or notarization by a District of Columbia commissioned notary public. A document is considered authenticated once the District of Columbia Seal and the proper certificate has been affixed to it.

  • ONCA does not notarize documents.
  • ONCA is an agency of the District of the Columbia. It does not accept passport applications or applications for FBI fingerprints for or any other federal purposes. For information on passports visit the State Department website.
  • ONCA does not accept cash for any transactions
