Betty Akers is a native Washingtonian and Ward 5 resident. Akers is a graduate of Eastern High School. With more than 35 years of governmental experience, Akers began her career with the Federal Government working for the United States Coast Guard and later the United States Department of Labor. In March 1982, Akers transferred to the Government of the District of Columbia, originally working with the Metropolitan Police Department and ultimately joining the Office of the Secretary in 1985 under former Mayor Barry. For the last 25 years, Akers has been an integral part of the Ceremonial Services Office within the Office of the Secretary.
